• Sequencing  
Select 4 red school counters and 4 blue school counters. Arrange the school counters in a pattern for the child to copy. Take turns and let the child arrange his or her school counters in a pattern for you to copy. As the child becomes more confident, add a third and fourth color to the sequence. Cognitive: 
  • Activities start simple and become more difficult so children can work at their own pace and progress as frustration levels permit.
  • Learning with the cards provides practice in pre-literacy skills, such as AB patterning and working from right to left providing easier steps in learning to read.  
  • The task on each card is short from start to finish, which helps a child who has attention difficulties finish a task and feel a sense of accomplishment and desire to continue.
  • Children practice and enhance fundamental skills, such as sorting and matching, utilizing pretend play and imagination.  As children play, they will be gaining useful information and skills in a fun, inviting way, rather than therapeutic repetition.

Suggested Activities : 
Before and After  -   Cover all but one number on the line using the blank number-line flip cards.  Ask students to identify the number that comes before and after the number displayed. Give students write-and-wipe markers (not included) to write numbers on the flip cards.
What’s Missing? -  Cover one or several of the numbers on the chart using either of the blank flip cards. Challenge students to look at the remaining numbers and identify the missing numbers. Easily adjust this activity to challenge students of all skill levels.
Counting Backward  -  After students have mastered number identification and sequencing 0–20, create more counting and number identification problems using the reverse side of the chart. Students will show true mastery of number identification and sequencing when they can identify 0–20 in both ascending and descending order.
What’s the Pattern?  -  Use the number line and flip cards to display various number patterns, such as:
–Counting by 2s or 5s from 0 to 20
–Starting with the number 2 and adding 4 each time to find 6, 10, 14, and 18
–Displaying odd numbers only
Have students look at the uncovered numbers on the line and identify the rule you used to make the pattern. For extra challenge, students can extend the pattern by identifying numbers beyond 20. Have students document their learning by creating their own number lines using paper and pencil to show different number patterns.
Intervention Strategies
• Counting: Have students point to and touch each number sequentially as they count aloud to prevent rote counting habits.
• Beginning Addition: Counting On is a basic way to add a small quantity to a large quantity. For example, to solve 4 + 3, a student can count on three numbers: 5, 6, 7. Have students count on (or back for subtraction) as they touch numbers on the chart.
• Number Sense: Ensure that students are viewing the number line from left to right to prevent confusion during problem-solving activities.
• Computation: Encourage students to draw their own number lines when working out traditional paper-and-pencil number problems to help them visualize problems and clarify their understanding of both the problem and solution.
• Measurement: Use number lines to introduce the concept of linear measurement, rulers, and standard units. Emphasize that measuring with a ruler is very similar to counting from left to right on a number line.

Number Sequence:  To practice number recognition and sequencing in both ascending and descending order, have students count the numbers as they walk forward and backward along the line.
Greater Than and Less Than: Roll dice or spin a simple number spinner. Then, ask students to identify a number that is “greater than” or “less than” that number. Use the number line to reinforce direction (right and left) as it relates to number quantity (greater than or less than). For a challenge, ask students to identify numbers related to a specific criteria, such as “two more than” or “seven less than” a given number. Use the number line to show how the student can walk the line and count aloud to find the solution. Create a simple chart that tracks student performance. Use the data to complement traditional paper-and-pencil assessment and show performance over time.
Skip Counting: Have students skip count along the line by 2s, 3s, 5s, and odd or even numbers. Challenge students to step only on the numbers that match the established criteria. Use the color-coding of the numbers on the mat to reinforce odd and even numbers.
Addition & Subtraction: Model simple two- and three-addend problems on the number line. Mark numbers with bean bags or have multiple students stand on the line. Practice modeling fact families and invite students to represent addition and subtraction operations. Challenge students to show their understanding of addition and subtraction by using formal number sentences (1 + 2 = 3), tallies, pictures, or number lines drawn on paper.
Story Problems: Use the number line to help students understand basic story problems involving key math language (in all, how many left, total, altogether, more than, less than, etc.). Example: Josie read 4 books.   Lucas read 3 books.   How many books did they read in all?   Have a student stand on the number 4 to represent 4 books.   Then, discuss ways to solve the problem using the number line (the student steps 3 places to the right for a sum of 7).

reading. If your child is successful at moving these larger objects, try picking up smaller objects such as beads and small, round buttons. Involve the whole family in a fine motor game: use tweezers to pick up household objects of  various sizes. Place a variety of objects in a pile in the middle of a flat playing surface. Assign each object a point value. The larger objects (cotton balls, blocks, etc.) should be worth 1 point. The medium-size objects (nut and bolts, buttons, candy pieces) should be worth 2 points. The smallest objects (coins, pieces of string, flat buttons, seeds) should be worth 3 points, as these are the most difficult to pick up. The youngest player goes first and uses the tweezers to pick up an object and transfer it to a bowl. Record the points based on object size. Play continues until someone reaches 10 points.

Only once while raising 4 children did we have to help one of them with early number concepts. I placed forks and marbles and dimes on the floor and sorted them into sets of equal sizes. I taught a one-to-one correspondence first and then sets of equal size (sharing a common name).  (see Number and Geometry)  It was thrilling seeing these concepts understood after only a few days. The experience and timing must have been right. After that, they learned math easily. HANDY NUMBERS reminded me of this experience. And this set offers much more.
