About Ten Frames:
The ten-frame model allows students to
think of numbers in relation to 10, which develops number sense and place-value
skills. With the ten frames and magnetic counters, students make
representations for numbers 1–10, practice counting, develop addition and
subtraction combinations to 10, and much more.
The double ten-frame model allows
students to develop numbersense skills at an even higher level. With the double
ten frame, students model numbers from 1–20. Students can also make tens,
visualize the teen numbers, and practice addition and subtraction to 20.
Fun
Uses in the Classroom:
Hold team competitions in the
classroom. Split the classroom into two teams. Pass out one board to the first
person on each team. Call out any number 0–10. The first person (or team) to
place the correct number of counters on the board and hold it up wins! Use the
double ten-frame side of the board to work on numbers 0–20.
Work with small groups on specific
math skills. Gather a small group of 2– 4 students together. Give each student
a board and work on skills based on specific needs. This small group work
enables students to provide quick responses and immediate answers.
Work on mental math skills using the
ten-frame boards. Key questioning can provide the teacher with insight into
students’ thinking.
Ask these key questions when working
with ten-frame boards:
How can you make ____ on the ten
frame?
Can you show me a different way to
make ____?
Show me ____ more; what is the number
now?
Show me ____ less than 10. What is the
number?
Show me ____ more than ____. What is
the number?
Can you show me any doubles facts?
Show me ____. How many more make 10?
How many more make 20?
The Magnetic Ten Frame Boards bring
fun to the classroom and provide a visual way to learn about numbers, counting,
and much more.
